Anglesea Barracks is the oldest military barracks still in use in Australia and is one of the Australia's most significant historical military precincts.  The Gaol was established to accommodate wayward soldiers and was built in 1847.  This imposing building contains the gaolers' quarters and 12 individual cells.

The Gaol was built when military numbers were at their peak in colonial Tasmania and preceded the "Separate Prison" built at Port Arthur in 1850.

This building has had many uses over its 175 years and is now home of the Army Museum of Tasmania which has thousands of artefacts from colonial times to present.  Artefacts that have witnessed trauma.

MEETING POINT

Meet your guide outside the Anglesea Barracks Main Gates located at 96-120 Davey Street, Hobart, Tasmania.

Please arrive at least 10minutes prior to your tour commencing as unfortunately we cannot wait for latecomers.

RESTRICTIONS

The Military Gaol building does have stairs and may not be suitable for people who have difficulty walking up and down.  Please contact us if you would like to discuss these restrictions further.

CANCELLATION POLICY

Carefully review your tour, date and time prior to your purchase as ALL our tours are NON-REFUNDABLE.

If you are unable to attend on the date of your tour, you must give at least 14 days notice if you wish to transfer to another date, otherwise if you miss the tour entirely, you will not be eligible to transfer and you will not receive a refund.
